Tips on preparing your kitchen for your appliance rental delivery

washing machine in a utility room

So you’ve chosen appliance rental? You’ve already picked out your shiny new product – a washing machine, tumble dryer or fridge-freezer. You can’t wait to start using it to make your homelife a whole lot easier. Now, it’s just a matter of waiting until hiya! bring it directly to your door. Instead of counting down the hours, it’s time to prep your kitchen for your exciting delivery. Find out the steps you need to take to make our simple install process even easier.

Pick the place

First things first. Where are your rental appliances going to live? If you’re in a new home with plenty of places to choose from, try to figure out what makes most sense with your lifestyle. Nobody wants a faraway fridge when they’re cooking or a tumble dryer miles from the washing machine. There’s even a ‘golden triangle’ design method – spacing your sink, refrigerator and oven in a rough triangle, no more than a few feet apart. You might be lucky enough to have a utility where your white goods can be tucked away.

Size up your spot

Once you’ve chosen the spot, it’s time to size it up. You need to make sure your new appliance fits perfectly. Take precise measurements, including height, width and depth. If it’s too wide or tall, you won’t be able to fit it in. Luckily, depth is slightly less of a problem. If the space isn’t as deep as your new item, just be aware that it might have to jut out slightly. You also need to leave room for any doors to swing open and check there’s enough ventilation nearby.

Check connections

Hopefully you already know if there are the right pipes or cables close by. It’s an essential part of choosing the most appropriate home for your new appliance. Washing machines need to be plumbed into a water line, have a waste-water pipe and electrical outlet nearby. Tumble dryers and fridge-freezers usually just need an electrical supply (unless you pick a vented dryer). If you’re not sure about the connections in your space – get in touch with a plumber and organise an appointment before your delivery date.

Tidy the area

If your chosen space isn’t empty, you need to declutter. Is it housing your old appliance? If so, turn off the power and water, then disconnect it safely. You’ll need to dispose of it in the right way by taking it to a tip with an electricals area or selling it on. If you’re using the space as storage and it’s full of clutter, make sure this is tidied away somewhere before your hiya! team member arrives to install.

Clean it down

Give the empty area a good old wipe down. Grab your favourite household cleaners – disinfectants, degreasers, scratchy sponges or just hot soapy water. Scrub away at any grime so that it’s sparkling, safe and ready to slot in the new appliance. Once the white goods are installed, it’ll be a lot harder to tidy up around them so this is your chance to do a proper deep cleanse.

Choose your route

On delivery day, you want to make sure it’s easy for us to access your kitchen. Plan ahead by deciding which route through your home the driver will take. That way you can instruct them and avoid any mishaps or confusion. If it’s a large appliance, pick the entrance with enough space. If you have a wider back-, side- or even double doors – they might be your best bet. There needs to be room to turn the appliance, at certain angles, to get it through doors and upright in the designated space. Don’t forget to clear the path of any obstacles too.
